I have been really enjoying editing my photos using Photoshop. I use CS3 but what i do can be done all the way to the early versions. I find using the layer masks really helpfull when actually trying to preserve the orriginal image.

Using Layer masks enables you to turn them on and off and it doesn’t mess with the original pixels.

I find the Levels one really great as it sorts out the exposure for most photos. if there are larg contrasts you may find it helfusl to select the different areas ie skys or whites as they tend to be over exposed.

I find it hard to know what photos filters work the best so sometimes i use all of them and even then colaging a series of photo filtered images looks nice.

Tell me if you have any other good tips for easy quick Photo Editing. Subtle photo edit.

But I would like submit my passport??? Random and maybe not very creative…. but I felt it related to some of the issues like truth and whether or not it can be trusted as its only some plastic and paper at the end of the day… who certified it… what authority did they have to do so…etc….

Some of the things i enjoyed were the aspect of anarchy and order….
- Do we Naturally strive towards anarchy… ie do we live in a natural state of chaos.

or is anarchy a form of what society has shaped and is not our natural built in state. Surely we all deep down want to love one another and get along in order.

I have found this a really hard experience as I tend to have the perfectionist attitude that hinders my actual amount of work I get done. What I mean by this is there are so many amazing sites that I have been getting inspiration from but not actually applying that to my own site in fear that mine will not be good enough.

I have decided now to just go for it and put something out there and work on that as something is better than nothing. It is rewarding once you get something right but i am finding this a tough and arduous process.

Is it just me or do other people feel the same way??

It is interesting as this is something that has been coming through some of the Media theory options I have been studying…

www.biblipedia.net/notes/id/242

It may actually be more of a synopsis of the book.

Goffman, Erving, 1987. The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, London: Penguin

Short review on

This book struck me as being indirectly relevant to me on the IMP course. Although Goffman was dealing with a broader take on Identity in society it was strikingly applicable to the use of social networking and the “Cyberspace” that is developing on-line.

Goffman identifies trends in society that bring to light the way we interact with people socially and physically, formally described as a “Front persona”. These can be sometimes shaped by the “censorship” in our cultural society.

He contrasts this with the idea of “Back persona” that demonstrates more of what we are actually like behind closed doors. This is found in games such as Second Life.

Another aspect that is looked at is the Idea of the “stage”. The “stage” being how we are almost in a constant performance all of the time. It looks at how we “act” as such in everyday life.

“Trust, I argue, is a crucial generic phenomenon of personality development as well as having distinctive and specific relevance to a world of disembedding mechanisms and abstract systems.” Quote from “The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life”

What Giddens is saying here is how creating trust with the user is crucial as it will develop a sense of trust with say a social network. This will in turn add to them being able to develop as sense of personality or Identity on the social network.

This book has sparked off some interesting thoughts in me and has brought to light some interesting theory’s that explain the way, as the title describes, we present ourselves in everyday life.

I have been following the situation in Kenya fairly closely as it is where I live or have lived.

The situation was and or is that there was a huge political dispute over the 27th of December 2007 General Election. The basis of the unrest was that the incumbent President Mwai Kibaki was accused of rigging the election resulting him retaining the post as president. Hon Raila Odinga was the main opposition and all though his campaign was saying that rigging was in process and when he finally lost he maintained his line saying that it was rigged in favor of President Kibaki. This resulted in a sever rioting and looting. Inter ethnic clashes found the Kikuyu tribe targeted as this was the tribe of President Kibaki. As a result of the rioting the police and army, who were instructed to cull any form of political protest, used unnecessary force resulting in numerous deaths, mainly the protectors.

So what i want to compare is the “reputable” international news agency Reuters reporting on the matter. Against Hon Raila Odinga’s personal blog.

The Reuters article. www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSL0269316120080103?pageNumber=3&virtualBrandChannel=0

Hon Raila Odingas Blog
www.cemp.ac.uk/communities/interactivemedia/forum/posting.php?mode=editpost&p=3877

What i did was take a posting on the 3rd of January from the blog as well as a a news report on the 3rd as well. This was to just try and make sure that they were both nearly in the same time frame.

The blog states “Sorry for being away for sometime as you all know our country is slowly going to the dogs just because of a few individuals who manipulated election results at ECK to protect a group of individuals not ready to relingiush power.”

This is clearly a very opinionated personal thought of Hon Odinga. It is very shrewd and understandbly bias.

The Reuters report… “Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki offered on Thursday to talk to his political rivals.
“I am ready to have dialogue with the concerned parties once the nation is calm,” Kibaki said.”

The blog is very concise and to the point and states that Hon Odinga has been cheated. Although this may be slightly drifting from the point but it is interesting if you go on to read some of the comments made by the supporter it is almost in reaction to the Reuters article

“Power sharing: Forget that. How can we have a government of national unity? Who will be the opposition then? How can we share a table with thieves?”(COMMENT BY OTIENO)
VS
“U.S. President George W. Bush urged Kenyans to refrain from further violence and called on Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga to “come together” to resolve the dispute.” (REUTERS ARTICLE)

A re-tallying of the votes is no longer possible. Michuki has made sure he’s destroyed the evidence at ECK offices. (COMMENT BY OTIENO)
VS
“Attorney General Amos Wako said both sides should agree on an independent person or body to carry out “a proper tally” of votes from the election.” (REUTERS ARTICLE)

So what i am trying to compare here is how Reuters has to be very diplomatic in there reporting showing much more of a factual report and concise report that doesn’t seem to side with either party. In contrast with the Blog, how it is completely biased towards the Hon Odinga Party. Even the coments that people were making on it were extremely blatant.

I think this shows, though obvious, Reuters have to report on the situation showing more informative “reputable” views.

Not meaning to generalise here but Blogs do tend to be less diplomatic and show true oppinions of “the people”. They are not censored and regulated by Corporate standards.

People try and say that they prefer certain types of News media but I would argue they are independent of each other and cant be compared, they are in fact their own separate entities.

This was an image i created that was trying to express the conflict between nature and technology. And simply using the play on words of battery chicken i created this quite literal battery chicken image.

The image itself consists of a series of layered images using Photoshop and a bit of illustration to make the egg.

The images were obtained from a series of free or open source stock photography. The Duracell one may have actually been just googled?

So i think the main things is have i referenced the photographers for the images i have used (Chicken, Wire mesh) No I haven’t but I cant recall if I had as I just grabbed them with out looking at the conditions.

The battery may come under some fore of copyright as it is a name brand Duracell and they would complain I am using it against them I’m sure in some way.

Although i feel that it is enough of a montage that makes it my piece of work. IE I have edited enough that it is now my property. I don’t know how this would fair against copyright but id like to think I could publish it and not be sued (So long as I reference the photos I used from the stock piles)???
