Spots Kenya Rough Design
Posted by Mr West | Filed under Spots Kenya
Here we have a simple splash together of a design that i did in Illustrator. I have never used illustrator properly so this is one of my first times with it..
What i want to do is to keep things simple but quite artistic and quite textural…
I intend to use charcoal and pastels to draw up my textures and then scan them in and use them as the main borders and Header and footer sections
I am still working on the Spots Kenya Logo at the top likewise with the visual side of the paw prints..
I know its really rough but its just, as mark said, done from the eye. I will then tweak and make sure that it flows better in the css and web design part.
You can click on the link below to open it up in Light box
So if people could let me know if they like the design in general…
- if it will work in CSS?
- not a white background?
- Any other thoughts tips trick and crits??

It’s not bad, i quite like the texture on the footer. personally I would try to stick a tree shape in the background, adopting the texture. like a silhouette type thingy. think you should also try and put a subtle sky picture in place of the white. I’m imagining yellow sunset. not to vivid though. good stuff though, i need to practice in illustrator.

Not really keen to be honest. Not a very strong approach in my eyes. Would offer more constructive criticism but I’m in a hurry. Will add more later.

As promised:
1. All the text is far too clean, and rough edges don’t work on a plain white background. I’ve tried. Always looks bad. You need to work out whether to tidy up your page or roughen it up more – if necessary, bring in a collaborator to help with the artwork.
2. The footprints are, again, too clean. As above.
3. While the brush footer has some aesthetic appeal, he buttons along the top look lazy. They neither stand out nor recede from the design (and you want them to do the former.)
4. Your colour scheme isn’t evocative of Kenya. Likely that’s to do with the white background.
5. Largely the fault of the white background again: WAY too much empty space.
Lastly, I don’t know what the two box areas are for, so if you at least state what they are in future sketches then I can give some feedback on their positioning. At the moment they’re too abstract to really say much about.
There was something else I meant to say that I’ve forgotten – my brain isn’t having a good day – but I hope the above helps.

hey Tim, just checked my @Replies on twitter i had one from you regarding this post. I couldn’t type much in twitter box (due to lack of characters). I like the concept but there are a few things you need to do to make it look better. I can discuss it in Uni on Wednesday if you’re in?
