Photoshop editing. Layer Masks

I have been really enjoying editing my photos using Photoshop. I use CS3 but what i do can be done all the way to the early versions. I find using the layer masks really helpfull when actually trying to preserve the orriginal image.
Using Layer masks enables you to turn them on and off and it doesn’t mess with the original pixels.
I find the Levels one really great as it sorts out the exposure for most photos. if there are larg contrasts you may find it helfusl to select the different areas ie skys or whites as they tend to be over exposed.
I find it hard to know what photos filters work the best so sometimes i use all of them and even then colaging a series of photo filtered images looks nice.
Tell me if you have any other good tips for easy quick Photo Editing. Subtle photo edit.
