King Edward’s Bath Sixth Form Carols – Christmas Address

I just had the privilege to share the gospel with my sixth form this Christmas. These Men and Women are the future of this generation and have such potential to change the world for the better.

We had some brilliant singing and it was a great atmosphere.

The Great Light – Jesus

For quite some time I have had this burning in my heart….

Isaiah 9

2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Story

Have you ever been round to someone’s house and needed to loo in the middle of the night and not known where the light switch was? I found myself recently stumbling around my friends flat in Edinburgh trying to find the light switch to the toilet. It was a most awkward experience but eventually I found it. I was glad as it is not the easiest thing, as a man, aiming for the loo in pitch black.

It’s not easy bumbling around in the darkness, maybe with no hope or direction or guidance and for some this can be a symbolic picture of where we at in our lives now when we look deep down in our heart of hearts!

Every Christmas we are reminded of some extremely awesome news. This is that a great light has shone and this light is Jesus.

John 3

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

We have heard it so many times but stop and think a while on this line “for God so Loved us that he gave his one and only son” or ” For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given “Gods great gift to mankind was His Son Jesus. God came himself and dwelt among us and this is why so that through Him and what Jesus went on to do on the cross for us we may not perish but have eternal life!

This Christmas when we open our presents and receive all those lovely gifts may we remember that God sent His Son for us because He loves us. And that we no longer have to stumble around in darkness but have the Great Awesome Light, the light of Christ!

But what is “Eternal Life”?

John 17`

3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

May these words challenge and comfort all those that heard them and may we come to really know Jesus this Christmas.

Overflow of Love – Bible study on 1 Thessalonians and Paul

Over the last few days I have been reading 1 Thessalonians and have been amazed by the teaching and Love of Paul to the Church in Thessalonica.

Let me paint the picture a little. Paul was probably writing from Corinth, which is in Greece. This was not his native or home turf but it was where God had called him to. Praise God he was obedient to his call to preach the gospel to the Gentiles.

Galations 2 7 7 On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised,[a] just as Peter had been to the circumcised.[b]

 

He was writing to the Church in Thessalonica, which is some 360 Miles Aw

It was one of the first Letters written to the Church around 50 or 51 AD. So it was a young church only really 20 years after Jesus departed to heaven.

Paul was under persecution and threat from all sorts of people. He was being thrown into prison and treated in such an awful way Read Acts 16 & 17. Yet he did not give up.

Acts 16

37 But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”

Paul caused such uproar wherever he went so much so that people rioted. It is amazing how much preaching the Gospel will shake things up. I think it is important to realise this.

Acts 17

5 But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city

So there you have it a brief picture painted of what life was like for Paul at the time of writing to the Church in Thessalonica.

I want to take a look at how much love Paul had for these people. Even though he was going through such hell and persecution he still had the love and desire for the people who he once ministered to. He had one goal and that was for people to have a Hope in the Lord Jesus Christ. Right at the beginning in Chapter 1 he says something profound.

1 Thessalonians

4 For we know, brothers and sisters[b] loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

The spoken message and gospel of Christ carries such power through the Holy Spirit. Words are not enough it has to be anointed by his spirit. I believe if we simply proclaim the Gospel the Holy Spirit will work and convict peoples souls.

 

In Chapter 2 I was really touched by Paul’s love for the people he preached to. It says he felt “torn” away from them in person but NOT in spirit. He had and “intense longing” to see them. I get the impression that Paul could not stop thinking of them. Are we thinking of people in our Lives and longing to see them know Christ more?

Capter 3

10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

Are we praying for people and friends around us to grow deeper in the knowledge of Christ? It is so important we pray for our dear friends and family and people who we interact with. I challenge you to pray day and night for someone or a group of people.. pray that God would supply what is lacking in their faith.

Capter 3

12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

I pray that we would learn how to love people and others in such a way that it goes beyond our own selfish inward looking nature. I pray that our love for Christ and each other would overflow in our communities and friends. Lord would only you make this happen and help us be even bolder than the great examples we read of in the Bible such as Paul.

How can we be more passionate for people to know Christ through Love?

Does anyone have any stories of testimonies of people who have changed their lives just simply though loving them unconditionally?

What is stopping us proclaim the Gospel of Christ fearlessly as Paul did?

Does any one have any stories of how the people are fearless proclaiming the Gospel both big and small?

I will write a post about Gods Call to purity next as this is on my heart and comes up in 1 Thessalonians 4.

Four Dimensional Love

I have been greatly blessed by this bible study.

Based on this scripture…  Ephesians 3: 18-20

18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

This is taken directly from a bible study that i have been reading by Reinhard Bonnke. Its been really helpfull and just so applicable..

God’s love is not a mere sentiment or emotional attachment. Nor is it a dutiful relationship as when we love a father because he is our father, or our children love us only because they are our children. It is the other way with God. He fathered us because He loved us, before we were born. God’s love is not fondness. When we love anyone we send them gifts, flowers, and write them letters. He does all that! He fills the wide world with gifts and flowers, writes His love with the stars of heaven, and the poetry of everything that is beautiful. But more than that, much more than that, the love of God penetrates our cold hearts, shed abroad by the Holy Spirit. It is the closest and most personal love.

Its not a duty that he has to love us as we are his children but because he wants to… and that is so cool and special…. as even if we think there is no one out there that could possibly love us there is one who is and does… GOD…

Love and charity in English are the same word. Love! It changes its own environment, and creates an atmosphere of greatness, openness, and generosity. Love never has a zipped up purse.

Love is as infinite as God, for God is love.

Make Child Poverty History

I have just added an animation to my portfolio page and i think everyone who reads this should go have a look at it as i think its pretty good and powerful.

It is basically a short animation that is trying to raise awareness with all the issues with Child Poverty.

I was in a maths lesson and my Teach Dr. Pomeroy had a bracelet that was the make poverty history one with a little hifen or accent that added in the word child  marked in red. I was really challenged by this and took it on as the basis of this project. I have never yet managed to thank her but I will do. 

I think that children are the worst effected by poverty and is clearly evident with all the terrible pre famine warnings that are coming from across the world. Namely Ethiopia and India. As children cant defend them selves against this it is up to us to actually make a difference and help as much as we can to alleviating the problem.

One of the ways you can do this is by supporting a child through Compassion . 

Please can we talk about this issue and can people tell me what they think of the animation i made?

Do people realise how many children are actually dying due to starvation and disease??

Should we be using Scare Tactics with the statistics??

The last week and the one to come…

Well i have had a really great with my bro. He was on his halfterm from school. I went down to get him from Street Somerset Last friday… it was really busy as it was Bank Holiday weekend… I just got back from dropping him back which was a much better trip only took about one hour and twenty minutes. We had a really great time talking about leadership and just issues at school and we were able to bounce thoughts of each other. Its really weird as the things that he is going through are so similar to my own boarding experience at Monkton, Bath, UK. The main thing we were able to talk about was the Deadly Viper moto Radical Integrity and Radical Grace. Thing is he is in a year that is quite volatile the 4th year sorta suspended in the middle of the lower end of the school makes it hard and quite a difficult year. I think the thing is to have a consistent character that does not waver with the the tide of boarding life. It easy to get annoyed with fellow lads or mates as there is always going to be a sense of one up man ship and competitiveness at that age. 

We were able to do some fun things together like se the the new Indiana Jones movie. I didn’t really enjoy it but i enjoyed the whole cinematic experience down at Bournemouth’s Odeon. We also went to the beach a few times and played frisbe with Dan. We tried to go kitesurfing but the weather was a bit strong and rough for my 17 metre.

This next week is all about getting my work placement sorted out and really pushing for a good one. I really want to work with Campbell Rowley a photographic design agency as they seem really top of their field and like really great people. I just hope they give me an interview so that i can really sell myself and show how keen i am.  I think its so important to get to talk and meet with people face to face to that you can really show and tell them what you are all about.
